Age Joyfully with the Simple Principals of Slow Medicine

March 8, 2015 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Jewish Association Serving the Aging (JASA)

John Jay College, North Hall, 445 West 59th Street, NYC

Sunday March 8, 2015 – 10:00 am

So often in our culture, age is seen as something to be prevented, reversed or denied. Billion dollar industries exist for the explicit aim of “fixing” anything that has to do with the process of aging. Dr. Finkelstein, The Slow Medicine Doctor- author of Slow Medicine, Hope and Healing for Chronic Illness- encourages a completely different perspective on aging.  Here, the focus is on a process of living that is so strong, the anxiety associated with aging falls away. Instead of looking at age as a problem to be “fixed”, it is far more constructive to view aging as another beautiful part of the arc of human life. When seen from this perspective, one can more joyfully and healthfully accept the process of aging for what it is, a part of the human condition that leads us to cherish the life we have. Ironically, the less we “struggle” with the process of aging, the more slowly and benignly it takes place. As a result, we give the process more space and are able to appreciate all the beautiful changes and privileges that come with it, such as wisdom, peace and more time to “just be.”
