We live in a culture that worships youth and that views aging as a disease – thus the burgeoning field of anti-aging medicine. By critically examining and “detoxing” from our limited notions about health, productivity, and beauty, however, we can embrace the aging process with a sense of enthusiasm, joy, and wonder. True, the knees may not work so well, and the memory may not be as sharp with age, but with time comes experience – in turn leading to a depth, sense of perspective, and resilience that may have been lacking in our younger years.
Understanding health as encompassing not only the body, but also the mind, heart, and spirit; our relationships to nature, community, loved ones, and the divine; and our life’s purpose, we can optimize our wellness on every level and set forth on a new and exciting path in the later years of life.
