Over the past three decades, Dr. Finkelstein – a holistic doctor in New York – has distinguished himself not only as a doctor in private practice but also as the Medical Director of several major hospitals and health institutes, including two Integrative Medicine hospital departments/programs that he founded. Drawing from this diverse medical expertise, Dr. Finkelstein offers both a micro and macro point of view on today’s healthcare needs and challenges, and he provides a tried-and-true solution for healing individual patients and the medical system as a whole: Slow Medicine.
Through several of its ground-breaking cornerstones – recognizing the intra- and inter-connectedness of our lives; activating the positive domino effect of these connections; approaching illness as an opportunity for adventure; and establishing the doctor‘s role as a guide for the journey – Slow Medicine restores hope among patients and reminds doctors why they went into medicine in the first place.
In the interest of developing a living laboratory, where the Slow Medicine principles could be put into practice, Dr. Finkelstein – a holistic doctor in New York – established SunRaven: The Home of Slow Medicine, 15 years ago. Nestled in the countryside of Westchester County, NY, SunRaven is a converted barn on the grounds of a small working farm, where nature and healthy living are the foundation of medicine and science. Literally the home, as well as the office, of Dr. Finkelstein and his partner, Robin Queen, SunRaven also has been the home to thousands of holistic medical consultations, psychospiritual counseling sessions, meditation and yoga programs, personal growth seminars, and practitioner development roundtables, not to mention an active community garden.
Most doctor-patient and teacher-student work occurs in sterile environments removed from the lives of those involved. Dr. Finkelstein, however, not only offers house calls but also warmly opens his space to whomever he serves through his work. Living the message of Slow Medicine and passionate about sharing its ripple effect, Dr. Finkelstein walks his talk and demonstrates truly healthy living – whether eating fresh food from a garden, enjoying a loving relationship with a partner, or engaging in a daily spiritual practice. Starting with the act of welcoming patients and students into his life and modeling what is possible in all of our lives, Dr. Finkelstein initiates the healing response mechanism and sets the stage for the exciting journey to wellness.
