The new moon today is a more rare event than you might realize. This moon is a blue moon, named for two disparate qualities: the color the moon can appear at certain times of the year and for the fact that it is an “additional”, i.e. 4th moon for the season, the second in a calendar month. While it is always the case that the moon’s reflection is pause for our own, we might consider something even deeper for this phenomenon. As an idea, the blue cast, could lead us to think about how we connect to the element of water, also represented by the color blue. Or we can consider how things that happen once in a blue moon are worthy of special consideration.
There are many ironies and hidden messages in this cycle. Blue is the color of serenity and calm, yet the blue moon is out of the ordinary, a real surprise.
Regardless of how you receive the message of this day, look up to the sky tonight. Enjoy the mystery and the promise of a reward for your attention.
