The Solar Eclipse: When Darkness Obscures the Light

Something interesting is going to happen in a few hours. Our sun, the most conspicuous force in the universe beyond the earth itself and apart from our own individual lives within the cosmic reality, is about to disappear — a relatively rare celestial event, at least as far as our single lifetime is concerned; a paradoxical revelation, not something that I believe should simply be chalked up to a random phenomenon. Indeed, the event seems to me to be a poignant “on schedule” reminder that is timed perfectly with our collective experience of the moment — the shroud of darkness obscuring the light.

For those of you who may not be aware, the SunRaven Totem (an old story from the earliest inhabitants of the Pacific Northwest) is also such a tale. Clearly, the eclipse has drawn notice before. The lesson is profound. Can you imagine what it might have been like to live 10,000 years ago and witness the sudden obscuration of the sun. Without warning!? I surmise that it shook people up and resulted in careful reflection of the nature of things and what we take for granted. Still, as disconcerting as it might have been in the moment, it didn’t last. With commanding strength and perseverance, the sun held its ground. Indeed, it was a shadow. And it passed.

And, that is the lesson here. Hold your ground. In the midst of turmoil and chaos, stick to your convictions of an inner truth and the undying force of love’s light. The dimness cast by more diminutive forces will pass, and there and then you will stand shining bright once more.

Mitakuye Oyasin,
Michael
