Finding Health

As the year gets underway, I thought it would be helpful to send a picture that I’ve drawn in an attempt to encapsulate the entire project of a human life. I share it with you now to remind you not to overlook any of these key determinants of health.

And, here is something I’ve written recently that summarizes the image:

The word health is derived from the Anglo-Saxon root word Haelen, which literally means wholeness. Therefore, any approach for achieving health that doesn’t consider the full breadth of human experience is likely to miss the mark. Unfortunately, as most people in the consumer-oriented West understand, what we are “advised” to do, is rooted almost exclusively in “the physical,” and leaves us feeling incomplete and uncertain overall. To be as healthy as we would like requires that we fully examine all the variables, and weave them together into one plan; specifically, the inherent meaning, value and blessing of our life today, beyond, though including, the well-being of our physical selves.

I wish you well in making this a reality, and look forward to sharing more with you in our journey
together.

Mitakuye Oyasin,
Michael
